Workshop: Survey of a Rare Plant Habitat

09-30-2017 8:30 am - 11:30 am
Highland Drive and Broderson
Address: Corner of Highland Drive and Broderson, Los Osos

Saturday, Sept 30th, 8:30 – 11:30 am, Second survey of a rare plant habitat workshop, Los Osos

If you have an interest in collecting data at a rare plant habitat site, please join plant biologists Melissa Mooney and Bill Waycott for this workshop.

San Luis Obispo County is home to many rare plant habitats, most of which have not been surveyed in many years. We will work in teams to identify and record the dominant plant species within a 60-foot radius from a predetermined GPS point. We plan to survey other rare plant habitats in the county over the next two years. This data will be forwarded to the state office for inclusion in the Manual of California Vegetation.

Please meet at the corner of Highland Drive and Broderson Ave. in Los Osos. Bring a clipboard, sharpened pencil with a good eraser, a phone or device that reads GPS locations (if available), along with a hat, water, and snacks.

For more information, contact Melissa at (805) 459-8099, mjmoon@charter.net.

The trail to Indian Knob, the tallest of the hills south of San Luis Obispo, starts on the Guidetti Ranch near the airport. Access to this area is restricted to a few hikes a year, sponsored by EcoSLO. As native plant enthusiasts, the goal of these hikes, in addition to enjoying the oak studded property and a 360o view at the top, is your chance to view one of the rarest plants in this county, the Indian Knob Mountain Balm, Eriodictyon altissimum. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service: when this plant was federally listed as an endangered species in 1994, there were fewer than 600 individuals known to exist. The Pismo clarkia, Clarkia speciose, ssp. immaculate, also occurs along this trail. Both of these species are listed by CNPS as extremely rare 1B.1 plants.

Please RSVP the EcoSLO docent listed below to hold a place for the hiking date that suits you and to receive more information about the hike.
