February Meeting – Juncaceae and Rhamnaceae

For the Thursday, February 6, 2025 membership meeting, our speaker will be Reed Kenny on What a Rush – Adventures in the Systematics of Juncaceae (the rushes). Reed is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California Davis and has a Master’s Degree in Biology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. His research interests include California floristics as well as phylogenetic systematics.

The schedule for the membership meeting is 7:00-7:30 pm for social mixing and sharing of light refreshments, and 7:30-8:30 pm for a short business meeting (including the presentation of the Hoover Award) and our speaker. The meeting is held at the San Luis Obispo Veterans Memorial Building (directions below). General membership meetings are open to everyone.There will be an optional mini-keying workshop before the meeting from 6 to 7 pm on the Rhamnaceae family presented by Mindy Trask, Melinda Elster, and Jacqueline Rose. You will learn the key characteristics of this family (which includes Ceanothus and coffeeberry, among others) and practice keying local plant specimens in this family. Bring a 10x hand lens, headlamp, dissection tools, & Vascular Plants of San Luis Obispo County. Some extra loaner supplies will be available. Desktop seating is limited – please arrive a few minutes early for the workshop.
