Irish Hills Natural Reserve Hike

Hike to the Irish Hills Natural Reserve on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm on the Bog Thistle Trail. Come and learn what grows along a trail and then create a plant list of the observed species. Join us for a 2.5 mile walk through chaparral, sage scrub, and oak woodland in the Irish Hills, with a gradual 500 ft. elevation gain. The goal of this outing is to create your own plant list. Participants will split into groups of 2 or 3, be given a clipboard and pencil, along with the CNPS plant list for the Irish Hills. Participants will check off each and every species they encounter. The goal is to increase our appreciation of the rich diversity of the plant life all around us. Wildlife sightings will also be noted, as well as the subsurface components.

Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, sturdy shoes, and dress in layers for changing weather. A plant list for Irish Hills can be found on our website here. There are no bathroom facilities along the hike route. Rain or threat of rain cancel or postpone this trip. We will be taking the Bog Thistle Trail from the parking lot off Prefumo Canyon road. From the intersection of Los Osos Valley Road in the City of San Luis Obispo, take Prefumo Canyon road in a westerly direction 0.9 miles and the parking lot will be on your left, at latitude/longitude 35.262235, -120.711991 .
